During her residency at Air Berlin Alexanderplatz, Johanna Kotlaris has been working on a series of texts and songs that deal with forms of identification and projection in interpersonal relationships. Gathered in an album titled GAZE, these collected audio works serve as both script and soundtrack for a future performance. In the frame of her Salon she invites the audience to join for the first sharing of these sound works, which through spoken texts and different musical styles interweave the intimate and the public. Kotlaris examines how the experience of physical and conceptual boundaries––the human skin, a wall, refusal––influence our self-image and our projections onto others. In a multiplicity of narrative modes she speaks about the ways in which love, longing and violence are connected and how the emotional can become political. In doing so, she addresses subjects such as complexes, gender stereotypes, shame, megalomania, trust, control and the architecture of power structures. Referring to a moment in time that precedes a final performance, the listening session and album release will take place in the rehearsal studios of Uferstudios Berlin.
