Maartje Fliervoet studied visual art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (BA 1998), Cooper Union in New York (1997), the Sandberg Institute (MA 2000) and Art History at the University of Amsterdam (MA 2010). She took part in the residency programme of WIELS, Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels, Belgium.
The starting point for her projects are often images that evoke indefinite or contradictory associations. The perception of these conflicting elements could be seen as a confrontation with the formless. In this formless the limits of the perception of a picture or reproduction have been exceeded. To her, observation is an activity that at best results in a mental expansion of an object or image. Her interest lies in the area where categorisation fails; where images turn out to be unstable and unfit for a one-way interpretation.
