ADA is a self-organized, independent artists initiative formed in September 2008 to support, nurture, stimulate and to create space for critical reflection and debate in and about art, in an open, cross-disciplinary minded and a friendly environment.
At the core of ADA are the art practices of six Rotterdam based artists (Maja Bekan, Deirdre M. Donoghue, Gerwin Luijendijk, Margo Onnes, Esmé Valk and Sjoerd Westbroek) who also run ADA’s public program.
ADA is as much a mental state as it is a physical location. It can be thought of as a multifaceted, porous sphere, consisting of people, thoughts, ideas, knowledge and experience/s, which flow in and out from the Area. A common philosophy of the members of ADA is the simple belief in the value of specifically framed human encounters as artistically meaningful and valuable sites, where new knowledge can be activated and allowed into being.
. As we cannot host 6 people at a time in the residency flat, ADA came up with the idea to split the time into periods where only two of the group would be in Berlin holding a text talk while the rest of the group would do the same text talk in Rotterdam at the same time. They gave this idea the name „Would it be better if we worked in groups of two…?“ As we liked their idea we were curious to give it a try. ADA arranged a time table that described when each of them would be in Berlin and which text talk they would organize in that time period.
In the first week the whole ADA team stayed in Berlin in order to define and discuss the exact plan for the residency period.
