LAB-AUDIO-CHAT

Thursday 16th of April, 2020, Berlin time: 20:00-21:00

For this special edition of ABA-LAB online, Magali Dougoud shares two video works, Lac Club (14:40, 2018, French with DE / ENG subtitles) and Juana Llancalahuen et les Falsas Orcas (23:24, 2019, French with DE / ENG subtitles). They are an introduction to the research she is currently undertaking at Air Berlin Alexanderplatz. During this LAB, and after viewing the works (links to the videos will be send to you after your reservation), the artist will give an insight on the production process and the conceptual context of the works. Subsequently, the discussion will be open for comments and questions. You will have the possibility to join us by video, sound or chat only. We’re looking forward to seeing you all and virtually ‘prost’ with you on Magali Dougoud’s residency at ABA!

The two video works develop a specific language around water, liquidity and what is submerged. Water becomes an archive, an original memory transmitted to each “Body of Water”, connecting human and non-human to the ocean in a non-normative way. The videos confronts dominant historical and scientific narratives by gathering collective and intimate stories – connecting and reinterpreting them. They reconquest the field of possibilities to construct an emancipatory feminine imagination.

Lac Club was shot at the Lake Baikal in Siberia (Russia), one of the oldest lakes in the world. The video is build like a fragmented travel story and questions origin, dominant narratives of history and the possibility to create a collective connection between individuals.
Juana Llancalahuen et les Falsas Orcas is the result of a residency in the Casa Museo Alberto Baeriswyl in Puerto Yartou (Land of Fire, Chile), which is separated from the American continent by the the Strait of Magellan. This narrative mixes different tales with documentary facts, like the legend of Selknam (Patagonian native people) about the birth of the patriarchy and the scientific experiment telling the domestication of the foxes. In this new contemporary mythology, the common thread is the stranding of hundreds of female False Killer Whales. They protest against Juana Llancalhuen’s femicide, and in a broader sense to bring to a stop the violence against women.
