Salon Agenda:

„La Javanaise – a work in progress“

This salon took place in a specially selected location of an old industrial building in Berlin.
As an active exchange of thought through presentations and conversations, the Salon „La Javanaise a work in progress“ propose and discuss ideas of authenticity and imitation, trading and branding, performing and posing, presenting and becoming image. All in relation to the work-in-progress La Javanaise, which bases itself on the circularity of relations between a Dutch textile enterprise, former colonies in the East Indies and the current African market in a globalized (fashion) system. The product has moved from being an imitation of Batik, a manual wax-resist dyeing technique from the Indies, to being the authentic African Wax Print cloth produced in the Netherlands which was recently threatened by Chinese imitation. The company now brands itself as a fashion label and creates images in the Netherlands, with international African top models presenting the products to an African clientele, who have in other than institutionalized ways shaped this product.

The Salon is a gathering of invited thinkers with as special guests IanWhite, elaborating his concept of live-ness in performance, Regina Möller introducing her 1997 interview with F.C. Gundlach, the grand German fashion photographer, who’s fashion photography used acting as much as posing, and Wendelien van Oldenborgh in conversation with David Dibosa on their collaboration for the work La Javanaise.
