This project positions my own body as subject. In order to expose its most intimate and hidden details, I am collecting the sounds that unconsciously emerge from it. These could be coughing, laughing, or yawning, or more private noises like farting, urinating or burping. By sharing these familiar yet alien sounds to elicit a sense of the uncanny, I hope to generate a discovery of the visible body through invisible, ephemeral sounds.

I have centred my research on sound by using a method of interpreting momentary and unfixed noises and encrypting them into data. I have been working through various methods and possibilities surrounding the character of sound, as outlined by John Cage, Toru Takemitsu’s Study for Vibration (1962), Cathy Berberian’s Stripsody (1966), Graciela Castillo, Cornelius Cardew’s Treatise (1963–67), Jeongganbo (井間譜), and the earliest known Asian mensural system.

The sounds I have collected are made in my body every day. However, to be precise, they contain interpretations of time and sound of the individual and society. I realized that they could become another language that allows us to simultaneously feel both senses of sight and hearing, and that this creation of new language will provide opportunities for infinite possibilities.

In order to compose music with my bodily sounds only, I’ve collaborated with the Berlin-based composer Seyko Itoh. We’ve formed a relationship in which the most private bodily sounds are shared. The source of this music is my body.

The collected sounds are used as background music. This overlaps with the live sounds I make during the performance, which is set up as a conversation.
The movement in the performance involves kneading a massive volume of dough with flour and wine. The kneaded dough will look like a person’s pink body and the sounds will blend in.

Goeun Bae, artist.
Born Seoul (KR), 1984
Nationality KR

Goeun Bae’s work discloses a personal story that reflects the vulnerable and unstable position of women in today’s society. Bae’s works become the voice that unveils and challenges the often hidden violence and oppression inflicted upon women. By using the body, she expands the affective reasoning that is tied inside of her and eliminate the bounds of limitations. she practices them through behaviors of self-torture, repetition, and pressure, which remain as a series of processes with unpredictable outcome. And they are realized in film, object, performance, and photography
