Lonnie van Brummelen & Siebren de Haan

Artists in Residency
Artist couple Lonnie van Brummelen and Siebren de Haan were our second residents in 2010.Their selected research topic was “Reviewing the Caption”, which questioned the relationship between an artwork and its caption. How necessary is a caption? How much influence does a caption have on a viewer’s perception? What kind of negative influence can a caption hold? Lonnie and Siebrien spent much of their time visiting exhibitions and analysing the works titles. They developed a particular interest in “The Potosi Principle”, an exhibition curated by Andreas Siekman and Alice Creischer, displayed at Haus der Kulturen der Welt. As the exhibition was based around a historical event, it can be difficult to prove theories and statements presented. This posed significant questions about the accuracy, truthfulness and validity of the captions. After receiving a personal tour through the exhibition by its curators, Lonnie and Siebren resolved to base the analysis of their theory specifically around this exhibition.
